1. Linoleic acid: 2 percent versus 13 percent

On paper, avocado oil looks excellent. In the bottle, it often is not what the label says. A UC Davis study found that 82 percent of avocado oils tested were either rancid before they reached the shelf or adulterated with cheaper oils, sometimes the very soybean and sunflower oils buyers switched away from. That was 2020, and the problem has not gone away. A July 2026 UC Davis follow-up found the fraud has spread into processed foods, with 93 percent of chips labeled "100% pure avocado oil" adulterated, 71 percent of mayonnaise (100 percent for US-made products), and every salad dressing tested.
